La Liga heavyweights Barcelona are reportedly weighing up signing 29-year-old Colombian full-back Johan Mojica if they fail to land Marcos Alonso.

According to a report by Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo, Johan Mojica is the subject of interest from Barcelona over a possible move in the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants view the 29-year-old Elche full-back as a “low-cost alternative” to Marcos Alonso and Javi Galan, with his release clause being worth only €5.5 million.

Johan Mojica is a well-travelled footballer, having played for clubs in South America and Europe. The experienced Colombian international has represented four Spanish outfits, the latest being Elche CF, whom he joined in the January transfer window of 2021 from Girona. Elche initially signed him on loan before completing his permanent capture last summer.

The 29-year-old has turned out 51 times for Elche, chipping in with two goals and five assists while playing a starring role in helping them retain their La Liga status comfortably in 2021/22. And the player’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with several La Liga bigwigs, including Barcelona, setting their sights on him.

The Catalan giants are keen on signing a left-back this summer, as Jordi Alba is the only recognised option for the position at Xavi Hernandez’s disposal. The Barcelona boss was in a spot of bother whenever Alba was unavailable last season, trying several makeshift options to little success.

Xavi has thus been determined to bring in a left-back this summer, with Marcos Alonso his priority target. But Chelsea could block the Spaniard’s move to Barcelona, even though he has iterated his desire to return to Spain this summer. Barcelona’s alternative to Alonso is Javi Galan.

But pursuing Galan is not straightforward either for Barcelona, with La Liga rivals Celta Vigo demanding €18 million to part ways with the Spaniard. Johan Mojica has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, with his release clause being worth a mere €5.5 million.

But Barcelona will have to fend off stiff competition from Atletico Madrid and Sevilla to sign the 29-year-old Colombian international from Elche. Interestingly, Sevilla and Barcelona are clashing for another left-back, with the two La Liga clubs vying for Sergio Reguilon. But Mojica is also an option worth considering for Barcelona, thanks to his extensive La Liga experience.
