Newcastle United are reportedly weighing up a £15 million move for Burnley winger Dwight McNeil, a target for Crystal Palace and West Ham United.

According to The Sun, Newcastle United are keeping a close eye on the situation of Crystal Palace and West Ham United target Dwight McNeil in case Leeds United stand firm over their £35 million valuation of Jack Harrison, who is regarded as the Magpies’ primary option at the moment.

Newcastle United want to sign a winger to add another dimension to their attack. Allan Saint-Maximin has been heavily relied on, while players like Miguel Almiron and Ryan Fraser have been out of form recently despite their unquestionable work rate. Thus, Newcastle have been hoping to use their newfound wealth to increase Eddie Howe’s options out wide.

They are, however, being extra cautious not to overspend, which has put the brakes on their pursuit of key target Moussa Diaby. While they have since turned their attention and sounded out moves for English talents such as Harvey Barnes, Anthony Gordon, and Jack Harrison, Newcastle have been quoted astronomical prices.

Leeds rejected the Magpies’ low-ball £18 million bid for Harrison, stating that they would not lower their £35 million asking price. Although Newcastle are plotting a fresh attempt for the versatile attacker, it seems they are open to expanding their shortlist and have already lined up Burnley’s Dwight McNeil as a low-cost alternative if Leeds maintain their stance on their prized asset.

Since arriving from Manchester United, McNeil has gone made 147 appearances in all competitions for the Clarets, scoring seven goals while providing 17 assists. He was far from prolific last season and only contributed one goal in 38 Premier League games, but he was the most creative player in a Burnley team that had exceeded expectations in prior years until succumbing to relegation last term.

While his attacking output has left a lot to be desired, he has proven to be a versatile player with quality deliveries in his locker, while he can also defend from the wide areas. Eddie Howe has built his reputation on grooming youngsters into established Premier League stars. At 22, McNeil still has a lot of untapped potential and could end up being a bargain for the £15 million price tag.

Having said that, Newcastle United will need to act soon as they face stiff competition for McNeil’s signature, with Crystal Palace and West Ham also interested in his availability, having already opened talks to sign him.

Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira is looking for a more conventional wide option to complement the target man. McNeil, who excels at taking the ball down the line and putting in top-quality crosses, fits the profile. Meanwhile, West Ham have previously admired McNeil. But with talks to sign Filip Kostic at an advanced stage, they are unlikely to solidify their interest in McNeil.
