Newcastle United are reportedly ready to shell out €20 million to sign Memphis Depay from Barcelona.

According to SPORT, Newcastle United could hand Memphis Depay a way out of Barcelona. The Magpies are said to be showing interest coughing up €20 million to sign the out-of-favour Dutch forward, who is attracting interest from other Premier League clubs like Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur as well.

The Dutchman moved to Barcelona last summer in a free transfer after running down his deal with Lyon, expecting to lead their attack through the season. While early signs were encouraging, the arrivals of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Ferran Torres pushed Depay down the pecking order.

The Blaugrana have signed Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich and Raphina from Leeds United this summer, while re-signing Ousmane Dembele to a new deal. These arrivals will further cut down on Depay’s game time at Barcelona, and he is thus eager on sealing a move away from Camp Nou.

The 28-year-old still has a year remaining on his contract with Barcelona, and the Catalan club have slapped a €20 million price tag on him. Tottenham have been pushing for Depay’s signature recently, but the forward reportedly turned down their approach and is in no hurry to choose a new club.

Depay wants to study other options and expects to be among the important players at a club which fights for trophies on multiple fronts. Newcastle United, who have been boosted by the arrival of new owners and are aiming for a summer rebuild, have now entered the fray for his signature and are ready to meet Barcelona’s demands.

But the former Manchester United forward has already turned down Spurs’ approach, and Newcastle would not offer him a better chance at winning silverware than Tottenham would have. Therefore, it is likely that the Barcelona man will decide against joining Newcastle as well.

Depay’s former club Manchester United have also recently been linked with a move for him, but Barcelona are reportedly unaware of any such interest from the Red Devils. The Premier League heavyweights are in search of an attacker, with links with Ajax’s Antony resurfacing recently too. As for Newcastle, it is unlikely they will sign Depay even if though they are willing to pay €20 million to land him.
