Premier League heavyweights Arsenal are reportedly interested in 21-year-old Spanish defender Sergio Gomez as they seek a solution for the left-back spot.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Sergio Gomez is the subject of interest from Arsenal over a possible move in the summer transfer window. Nuno Tavares could depart from the Emirates if the Gunners secure the services of the Spanish left-back.

Sergio Gomez spent his formative years with Barcelona before joining Borussia Dortmund in 2018. But the move to Germany did not work out, and he first rose to prominence during his loan stint with SD Huesca. The 21-year-old has gone from strength to strength since joining Anderlecht in a permanent move last summer.

The Spanish defender was one of the most productive full-backs in Europe last season, amassing seven goals and 15 assists in 49 appearances across all competitions. Gomez’s exploits have not gone unnoticed either, with several European bigwigs, including Arsenal, setting their sights on him.

The Gunners have dipped their toes in the transfer market for a left-back this summer, with Kieran Tierney’s underwhelming fitness situation forcing them to consider bringing in a new player in the position. With Nuno Tavares flattering to deceive last season, Arsenal needed to find a solution for the position, considering Tierney’s absence in the latter stages of the 2021/22 campaign hurt them.

Gomez is thus a viable target for Arsenal, with several other left-backs also on their radar. Oleksandr Zinchenko, in particular, seems to be on top of Arsenal’s wishlist, with the north London club reportedly working on a deal to sign the Manchester City utility man.

Zinchenko might be the ideal target for Arsenal due to his utility in defence and midfield. But Gomez will offer a higher output in the final third, meaning Arsenal will need to weigh up the pros and cons of pursuing both players. Meanwhile, Tavares faces an uncertain future at the Emirates, with Marseille hot on his heels.

Marseille and Arsenal continue to discuss a possible summer move for the Portuguese defender, meaning a new left-back might soon arrive at the Emirates. It will be interesting to see if Gomez becomes a crucial target for the Gunners anytime soon or if they continue pursuing Zinchenko more seriously.
