Newcastle United have revived their interest in Duvan Zapata as the Magpies continue their search for a new forward.

According to Tutto Mercato Web, Newcastle United are ready to reignite their interest in Duvan Zapata as the search for a new striker continues. The Magpies were keen on the Colombian in January, but Atalanta were uninterested in the proposal back then.

Newcastle United have gone about their transfer business smartly in the two windows under new ownership. They were impressive in January as they brought in quality to survive in the Premier League. And they are very serious about strengthening the roster this summer as they aim to break into the top half of the table, with a new striker high on the wishlist.

Before they signed Chris Wood from Burnley in January, Newcastle United were keen on Atalanta’s Duvan Zapata. The Premier League side offered to pay €5 million in loan fees and would have agreed on a reasonable buy option at the end of the season.

Atalanta were uninterested in such a deal and kept hold of their striker. However, in the current window, Newcastle United are keen on a new forward who could give them a different dimension. Callum Wilson remains their main man in the front three, but his injury issues remain an issue. With Wood not exactly firing on all cylinders, another reliable goalscorer is needed at St James’ Park.

Zapata fits the bill for Newcastle as he possesses physical attributes highly rated in the Premier League and has proven himself as a consistent source of goals during his time at Atalanta.

The Magpies were close to signing Hugo Ekitike a few weeks back but pulled out of a deal for the Frenchman. The links to Zapata are understandable, as the Colombian could offer something different from what Wilson can. However, the 31-year-old is reportedly valued at €40 million by Atalanta, and Newcastle will be wary of paying such prices for a 31-year-old forward.

Newcastle value Zapata’s talent and experience, but making such a significant investment may sound unreasonable given his age. The Magpies are also linked with Alexander Isak and the idea of signing someone like the Real Sociedad star could make more sense because of his profile and age.
