Barcelona midfielder and captain Sergio Busquets has reportedly been approached by clubs in the MLS over a transfer in 2023.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona captain Sergio Busquets could leave the club next summer as he has been approached by teams in the Major League Soccer over a possible free transfer in 2023.

Busquets has been at Barcelona throughout his career. A product of the La Masia academy, the midfielder made his debut in 2008 under Pep Guardiola and has been an ever-present in the centre of the park since, racking up over 670 appearances and winning a host of titles and trophies.

A legend at Camp Nou, Busquets had endured a slight dip in form in recent years but was back to his best last season, especially after Xavi Hernandez took over the reins of the team. The 33-year-old will remain a key part of the team in the upcoming campaign, but his future beyond the 2022/23 campaign is unclear.

Busquets’ current contract with Barcelona runs out in the summer of 2023. And as reported by Romano, there have been no discussions between the midfielder and the club regarding a new deal.

It has opened the door for clubs from abroad to make an approach to Busquets over the possibility of a free transfer next year. And, as per the report, teams from the MLS have contacted the Barcelona skipper to explore the chances of signing him on a Bosman deal in the summer of 2023.

Busquets has previously rejected approaches from the MLS, but given his contract situation, the midfielder could consider the possibility of a move to the United States of America next year.

Barcelona, for their part, are already preparing a plan of succession for when the time comes for their captain to move on. Wolves and Portugal midfielder Ruben Neves has been identified as the replacement for Busquets. While a move for the former FC Porto ace had been discussed this summer, the Blaugrana have decided to postpone his pursuit for the summer of 2023.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Busquets. For now, though, the veteran midfielder will be looking forward to lead Barcelona to the top in the upcoming campaign after the disappointment of last season.
