Real Madrid defender Sergio Santos is reportedly on the verge of signing for Spanish second-division club CD Leganes this summer.

According to MARCA, Real Madrid prospect Sergio Santos is set to leave the club and join La Liga 2 side CD Leganes on a permanent transfer in the ongoing window.

Santos joined Real Madrid’s youth setup from Leganes’ academy in 2012 and has risen through the ranks at the club to become a key part of the club’s Castilla outfit, making over 50 appearances. The 21-year-old right-back played 28 times for Raul Gonzalez’s side in the 2021/22 campaign, scoring two goals and setting up four more.

Santos made his first-team debut for Los Blancos in September last year, playing ten minutes in a La Liga clash against RCD Mallorca. That remains his solitary senior appearance for the reigning Spanish and European champions.

A talented right-back who has exhibited good attacking abilities, Santos is now set to move on from Real Madrid. As things stand, the Merengues have Dani Carvajal and Lucas Vazquez as senior options at right-back, while they also signed Vinicius Tobias from Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Brazilian is expected to become the first-choice right-back for Castilla and provide cover for the senior team when needed. It has rendered Santos surplus to requirements at Real Madrid, with the club now in talks to offload him to Leganes.

Having spent the early years of his career at the Leganes academy, the 21-year-old is now set to return to his boyhood club, having reached an agreement with the Spanish second-tier outfit over personal terms.

Leganes are now negotiating with Real Madrid to finalise the details of the transfer for the former Spanish Under-20 international. The deal will be a permanent transfer and not a loan with a buy option. As part of the agreement, Los Blancos are likely to retain a percentage of a future sale.

With Real Madrid parting ways with Victor Chust, who has returned to Cadiz permanently and Mario Gila, who is joining Italian side Lazio, Santos will become the third La Fabrica defender to leave the club in a very short period of time.
