Clement Lenglet has reportedly reached an agreement over personal terms to join north London giants Tottenham Hotspur on loan this summer.

According to reputed Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, Clement Lenglet is inching closer to joining Tottenham on a loan deal in the summer transfer window. But the north London giants will reportedly pay only part of his wages, with Barcelona paying the remaining salary.

Clement Lenglet has endured a dramatic fall from grace in the last two years, becoming a bit-part player at FC Barcelona. The French defender was once a mainstay at the back for the Blaugrana but has tumbled down the pecking order due to his inconsistent performances in the last few seasons.

Ronald Araujo’s advent and Eric Garcia’s return did not help his case either, and he could go further down the pecking order in the coming season, with Barcelona keen on signing two centre-backs. So departing from Camp Nou, either temporarily or permanently, is the way forward for the 27-year-old. And his next destination seems to be London, with Tottenham keen on signing him on loan.

The interest from Tottenham comes in the wake of the ongoing squad rebuild project that Antonio Conte has undertaken. Spurs have already signed four players this summer and have been one of the fastest movers in the transfer window, bolstering their options on the flanks, in midfield and in the attacking unit.

Conte now wants to sign a left-footed centre-back to reinforce the back-three, as he wants an upgrade over Ben Davies. And with Joe Rodon facing an uncertain future at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, delving into the market for a cost-effective solution seems the ideal solution for the north London giants.

Lenglet thus emerged as a viable target for Tottenham, with Spurs moving quickly to convince him to move to England. And according to Fabrizio Romano, the French international has reached an agreement over personal terms with Tottenham, with the Barcelona defender closing in on completing his summer transfer.

The dependable Gerard Romero has provided further details on the transfer, suggesting Tottenham will pay only part of Lenglet’s salary (€12 million gross). Spurs will shell out €7 million in wages, with Barcelona forking out the remainder.

Meanwhile, Romano has added that Barcelona and Tottenham will soon hash out the final details of the transfer before closing out the loan deal. And with that Lenglet will complete a potential career-resurrecting move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he looks to reclaim his spot in the French national team ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
