Chelsea were reportedly set to make an ambitious move for Mohamed Salah prior to his Liverpool renewal.

A recent report from The Sun has offered interesting insights into Mohamed Salah’s long renewal saga with Liverpool. The Egyptian has recently made headlines by signing a bumper contract at Anfield, extending his stay with Liverpool until 2025.

Salah’s renewal made the Egyptian forward the highest-paid player in the club’s history. But the renewal might not have been possible without the involvement of Chelsea, who were weighing up a bumper offer for the attacker. The club’s new owner Todd Boehly was desperate to sign the Liverpool talisman as part of his plans to add more quality to the team.

With Romelu Lukaku returning to Inter Milan and Timo Werner likely to depart from Stamford Bridge, Boehly was determined to fill the gap by signing Salah from Liverpool. The player himself was aware of the interest from the Blues and through his agent, Ramy Abbas, Salah had informed the Fenway Sports Group he was open to returning to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Salah had played for Chelsea from January 2014 to the summer of 2016, but to very little success. He mustered only two goals during the second half of the 2013/14 campaign and made only three Premier League appearances before being shipped out to Fiorentina in early 2015.

Salah left Chelsea in 2016 by joining AS Roma on a permanent deal worth only €15 million. It turned out to be a fortune as the Egyptian international was extremely successful in the Italian capital. But it appears the Liverpool forward was open to returning to Chelsea in order to right the wrongs, especially after scoring just two goals in 19 competitive appearances.

The report suggests the interest from Chelsea played a key role in convincing Liverpool to offer the 30-year-old a bumper contract that makes him the highest earner at the club. Salah himself was delighted to sign the contract extension and is looking forward to becoming the leader of the Liverpool frontline in the coming years, especially after the exit of Sadio Mane.

The Senegalese international has joined Bayern Munich ahead of the new season, meaning the onus will be on Salah to lead the line for Liverpool alongside relatively new faces such as Diogo Jota, Luis Diaz and summer signing Darwin Nunez next season.
