Serie A giants AS Roma are interested in signing Tottenham Hotspur full-back Emerson Royal this summer.

According to the Express, AS Roma have joined the list of clubs interested in a summer move for Tottenham Hotspur full-back Emerson Royal. The Brazilian joined the north London club just last year but could leave after just one season.

The 23-year-old featured regularly at the beginning and towards the end of the 2021/22 season but could see his game time reduce drastically in the upcoming term. The north London outfit are on the lookout for a right-back and are closing in on a move for Middlesbrough’s Djed Spence.

Emerson has thus been linked with an exit. Atletico Madrid were the first side to show interest in the Brazilian. However, the Rojiblancos will now have to fend off interest from other clubs, while their financial issues make the transfer difficult.

Juventus are said to be keeping tabs on the right-back to prepare for a possible departure of Juan Cuadrado amidst a contract standoff. AS Roma have now emerged as another potential suitor for Emerson and could make a summer move for the Brazil international.

Roma are in the market for a new right-back to provide competition to Rick Karsdorp. Former Tottenham manager and current Giallorossi boss Jose Mourinho is looking at several options, including Arsenal outcast Hector Bellerin. Now, Spurs ace Emerson has also emerged as a potential target for the UEFA Europa Conference League champions.

Emerson’s agent, however, has recently claimed that the 23-year-old will stay at Tottenham despite recent rumours linking him with an exit. Speaking to Brazilian outlet Lance, the 23-year-old’s agent Dr Fabiano de Abreu commented on his situation. He claimed that Conte considers his client as his primary choice for the right-back slot.

“Emerson does not leave Tottenham. In fact, Antonio Conte said that even if it was for 40 million euros (£34m), the loan would not come out since he has the player as number one in his position. Royal is happy in the team and his football tends to improve,” he said.

Tottenham have been fairly active in the transfer window so far. They have completed four signings so far, with Ivan Perisic joining them from Inter Milan and Fraser Forster from Southampton. They have also added midfielder Yves Bissouma and attacker Richarlison to their roster.

Djed Spence could be their next signing, but they are yet to agree on a fee with Middlesbrough and it will be interesting to see if his arrival leads to Emerson’s exit.
