Arsenal have initiated contact with Amadou Onana’s camp over a possible move as speculation continues to surround his future.

According to Sacha Tavolieri, Arsenal are interested in Amadou Onana and have initiated contacts with his representatives over a move this summer. The 20-year-old Lille midfielder has significant interest from Premier League clubs, as his profile excites few London clubs.

Arsenal’s summer has had a reasonably decent start as Mikel Arteta has lent his focus on bringing in attacking talents. In addition, a new goalkeeper arrived, although the deal for Matt Turner was pre-agreed in January. There were also further incomings in Fabio Vieira and Marquinhos, while fans still await the official announcement of striker Gabriel Jesus.

On the other side, supporters have been concerned with the club’s lack of movement to bring in another new midfielder. Despite Mohamed Elneny’s new contract, the Gunners have been in the market for a new player in the position and remain heavily linked with Youri Tielemans.

While the Leicester City midfielder’s chase has been slow, Arsenal are looking to bring his compatriot Amadou Onana to the club. While the two Belgian internationals have different styles and positions on the pitch, it could be one or the other for Arsenal in this window.

The north Londoners need a new left-sided midfielder with attacking instincts, with Tielemans their top priority for the position. However, it seems that Arsenal are tracking Amadou Onana and could make a move for the Lille midfielder.

West Ham United were also interested in the Belgian international, but Arsenal could prove an attractive destination for the midfielder. Arsenal have reportedly contacted Onana’s representatives to understand the finer details before making an official approach.

Transfermarkt states a £9 million value for the midfielder, but Lille are likely to demand more considering his talent and the four years left on his current deal. Arsenal will look to find a reasonable solution with the Ligue 1 club, although whether they need the midfielder remains in question.

Onana could be considered a cover for Thomas Partey, as Arsenal do not have sufficient backup for the Ghana international. However, with the club keen on bolstering other areas of the pitch, the position of a defensive midfielder may not be considered a priority.

But Onana is one of the top young talents coming out of France, and if the right opportunity presents itself, Arsenal could make a formal approach. Lille’s asking price will be the stumbling block, and if the Gunners deem that unreasonable, there might not be a move for the defensive midfielder.
