Serie A champions AC Milan are reportedly the front-runners to sign Spanish forward Marco Asensio from La Liga counterparts Real Madrid.

According to Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Serie A champions AC Milan are in the pole position to sign Marco Asensio in the summer transfer window. The Spanish forward is expected to leave Real Madrid amid an impasse over the terms of a new contract.

Marco Asensio seems to be reaching the end of the line at Real Madrid, even though 2021/22 was his most productive campaign thus far in terms of goals. The 26-year-old ended the season with 12 goals in 42 appearances across all competitions, with only Karim Benzema and Vinicius Jr. finding the back of the net more often for Real Madrid.

However, Asensio will enter the final year of his Real Madrid contract later this week on July 1, leaving Los Blancos in a spot of bother over his long-term future. Talks over a new contract have hardly progressed, and recent reports have claimed that the reigning La Liga champions are ready to sell the Spanish international. Such a situation has captured the attention of AC Milan.

The Serie A champions are in the market for a new attacking reinforcement heading into the summer transfer window. While Divock Origi will arrive from Liverpool in a Bosman move to bolster Stefano Pioli’s centre-forward options, signing a wide-attacker is also on AC Milan’s wishlist.

Asensio has thus emerged as a viable target for AC Milan, where he could be a solid addition to the options on the right flank. With Alexis Saelemaekers and Junior Messias blowing hot and cold, AC Milan can do with a more consistent attacker on the right-wing, bringing the Real Madrid forward into the picture.

Widespread reports have also suggested that Asensio is open to joining AC Milan. And according to Defensa Central, the Serie A champions are the front-runners to sign Asensio from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

But it looks like Asensio will likely join AC Milan when he leaves Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. However, agreeing to Asensio’s wage demands remains an obstacle for Milan, and it will be interesting to see if the move sees the light of day.
