Newcastle United reportedly are favourites to sign former Liverpool midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from PSG.

According to Fichajes, Georginio Wijnaldum is eager to return to the Premier League, and Newcastle United have emerged as favourites in the chase for the midfielder. PSG are prepared to sell the Dutchman for the right price and use the money to fund a new midfield transfer.

Newcastle United are making big plans to strengthen their squad in this window. The Premier League side have begun their dealings in the market as the Magpies are closing in on Sven Botman from Lille, which will strengthen their central defence. Matt Targett and Nick Pope have also been signed although plenty of important business is yet to be conducted.

Manager Eddie Howe wants players who can bring in experience, to help the clubs in the short to medium term, as Newcastle United target a crack at the top-six in the Premier League. They signed Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid in January to add the experience and know-how to their roster and might be planning for another similar signing in the summer.

As per the report, Newcastle United are now chasing former midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum from PSG, who is eager a return to the Premier League, with the Parisians open to letting him go.

The Dutchman signed for Les Parisiens on a free transfer from Liverpool last summer but has failed to kick on as expected. Having failed to settle down at Parc des Princes, he had become a transfer target for Premier League sides in January, although nothing materialised despite strong links.

Eventually, Wijnaldum ended up making 38 appearances across all competitions for PSG. However, the Parisians are open to letting him leave for the right price this summer, and Wijnaldum has since attracted interest from several clubs.

There was also mention of a possible return to Liverpool, although Jurgen Klopp’s side are not considering that possibility. For now, Newcastle United have emerged as the favourites for the 31-year-old, as the Magpies are keen on adding on the Dutchman’s experience, which would improve their squad quality.

Wijnaldum played for Newcastle United before joining Liverpool, making 40 appearances. His services at Paris are unlikely to be missed as PSG are already looking for replacements, with Vitinha and Renato Sanches likely to join the Ligue 1 giants. So, a return to St James’ Park could be on the cards for the Dutch midfielder.

As for Newcastle United, the price tag would not represent a huge problem. Despite his struggles in France, Wijnaldum can be a shrewd acquisition for Newcastle as they continue to build their squad to push for a top-six finish.
