Fulham have reportedly tabled a contract offer to AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli, who is set to depart the club as a free agent this summer.

According to Sky Sport Italia, Fulham have submitted a contract proposal for AC Milan captain Alessio Romagnoli, who will be leaving the club when his current deal expires on June 30.

Romagnoli has been with Milan for seven years when he joined from Serie A rivals AS Roma. He has made 247 appearances for the Rossoneri, bagging ten goals and three assists in the process. However, the 27-year-old has lost his starting berth at the heart of the Milan defence over the past eighteen months.

Indeed, Romagnoli has fallen behind Simon Kjaer, Fikayo Tomori and Pierre Kalulu in the pecking order at San Siro and started just 16 games in Serie A in 2021/22 as Milan won the Scudetto. And with his contract expiring in less than a week, the centre-back is set to move on as a free agent.

Romagnoli had been linked with a move to Lazio, but talks have gone quiet of late. There had been murmurs of interest from the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Manchester United, although nothing has come of it either. Now, newly-promoted Premier League club Fulham have entered the race to sign Romagnoli and have made a contract offer.

Back to the top flight after winning the EFL Championship, Fulham are looking to add more quality to their roster to avoid the drop back to the second division. And a new centre-back is high on the transfer wishlist of manager Marco Silva, with Michael Hector and Alfie Mawson poised to leave as free agents.

It would leave Fulham with only Tosin Adarabioyo, Tim Ream and Terence Kongolo as options at the back. And with Adarabioyo also being linked with a summer move to Newcastle United, the Cottagers need to sign a new centre-half to bolster their defensive ranks for the upcoming campaign.

To that end, Fulham have seemingly identified Romagnoli as a target and have lodged a contract offer for the 27-year-old. However, the report states that the Italian international is not enthusiastic about a possible move to Craven Cottage as he sees it as a stepdown despite the possibility of earning a lucrative salary.

Instead, Romagnoli is hoping that Milan offer him a new deal after missing out on Sven Botman, who is set to join Newcastle United. If not, the 27-year-old is hoping that talks with Lazio restart again. But if neither of them materialises, Fulham’s proposal is on the table for the 27-year-old.
