Manchester United have reportedly opened talks with Watford to sign goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are in the market for a goalkeeper to replace second-choice shot-stopper Dean Henderson, who is closing in on an exit. They have thus opened talks with Watford for goalkeeper Daniel Bachmann.

Bachmann has been with Watford since joining them from Stoke City in 2017. He could not cement his spot as their first-choice goalkeeper and made sporadic appearances for the Hornets across competitions, totalling 45 matches in five years.

Bachmann made 12 Premier League starts in the recently-concluded campaign, which saw Watford return to the Championship after just one season in the English top-flight. But the Austrian international could be set to a return to the Premier League with Manchester United.

The Red Devils have had the problem of plenty as far as the goalkeeping position is concerned. Dean Henderson was temporarily made the first-choice goalkeeper in the second half of the 2020/21 season and was set to start the following season as well.

However, an illness kept him from starting the season, allowing David de Gea to reclaim his spot, which the Spaniard did in style. Henderson was limited to just three appearances for the club across competitions.

De Gea also seems to be the new manager’s Erik ten Hag’s preferred goalkeeper despite his limitations on the ball. Henderson is thus keen to join a new club this summer, where he would be the team’s number one.

Nottingham Forest have emerged as the favourites for the England international’s signature. The recently-promoted club are close to completing the deal with Romano claiming the goalkeeper is just ‘one step away’ from joining Forest on loan.

This has left the Red Devils searching for Henderson’s replacement, and they have seemingly zeroed in on Bachmann. Manchester have initiated discussions with Watford over a summer move for the goalkeeper, but the Hornets will ‘only consider a permanent deal’.

Manchester United will have just Tom Heaton, along with De Gea, left in the goalkeeping department following Henderson’s impending departure, with Lee Grant having announced retirement from professional football. So, signing a new shot-stopper is imperative for the 20-time English champions, with Bachmann emerging as a potential candidate.
