Everton are reportedly in talks to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Harry Winks this summer.
According to Daily Mail, Merseyside giants Everton have held talks with Tottenham Hotspur regarding a summer move for English midfielder Harry Winks.
The Englishman came through the ranks at Tottenham, making his first-team bow for the north Londoners in 2014. He has since won 202 caps for the club, scoring five goals and assisting six more. However, Winks’s stock has fallen in recent seasons and limited him to just 1696 minutes in the 2021/22 campaign.
The arrivals of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Rodrigo Bentancur in recent years have added further competition to Winks’s chances of establishing himself as a first XI regular. Antonio Conte is already charting a new future for Tottenham, and it would appear that Winks is far from assured a spot in his plans.
At 26, the midfielder is entering his prime and will benefit from gaining regular minutes on the field. Everton require a central midfielder this summer and could offer Winks the opportunity he seeks to rekindle his career in the Premier League.
Frank Lampard’s side barely staved off relegation last season, and the Everton boss will be keen to strengthen this summer. The Chelsea legend was a midfielder in his heyday as a player and could assist in re-energising Winks’s career.
A central midfielder who can also play in a defensive capacity, Winks is a good passer of the ball in the midfield. He has an eye for making through balls and can also defensively read the game, stopping opposing attacks in their tracks. A calm customer in possession, the 26-year-old would certainly offer something different to Everton’s midfield.
The Toffees are currently in talks with Tottenham regarding a summer deal, and negotiations might pick up pace in the coming weeks. Given the experience Winks brings to the table, he could aid Allan and Andre Gomes in rediscovering their mojo on Merseyside. Tom Davies has lost his way, while Fabian Delph is past his best. Winks will have a better shot of making a difference at Goodison Park than the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
A move to Everton is a win-win for all parties. Not only will it hand Winks regular playtime, but also address a key weakness in the Everton squad. More so, Tottenham could also cash in and re-invest that amount into their squad.
