Aston Villa are reportedly open to sanctioning the sale of John McGinn amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

According to Football Insider, John McGinn is staring at an uncertain future as tensions are brewing between him and Steven Gerrard. The Aston Villa manager is not thought to be a huge admirer of the Scottish international and has complained about his lack of consistency in the Premier League.

McGinn is also thought to be a difficult player to manage as he is “always whinging” in the background. As such, Aston Villa are now willing to listen to offers for the midfielder ahead of the new season, with Tottenham Hotspur among the clubs interested in securing his services this summer.

Formerly of Hibernian, John McGinn has been an ever-present figure in the Aston Villa setup since joining the club in 2018. During his four years at the club, he has racked up almost 150 competitive appearances at Villa Park, recording 16 goals and 23 assists.

Although a central midfielder by trade, the Scotsman is known for his attacking style of play. He loves to make driving into the box and is capable of appearing at the right place at the right time. It makes him a valuable asset in the middle of the park, not only in Aston Villa’s second line of press but also in the final third.

McGinn’s qualities are recognised by Tottenham manager Antonio Conte. The Italian tactician is looking for reinforcements in the middle of the park, even after the capture of Yves Bissouma.

While the Brighton & Hove Albion starlet is expected to strengthen the defensive core, Spurs are hoping McGinn can add more impetus going forward, thus bringing an excellent balance to the midfield unit. His experience in English football should be an added bonus that would make him nothing less than a coup for Tottenham.

Luring McGinn from Aston Villa should not be too difficult either for Tottenham as the Scotsman has been made available by Aston Villa following the capture of Boubacar Kamara. Aston Villa are also prioritising a move for Liverpool outcast Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who could be a decent enough replacement for McGinn next season.

However, Tottenham surely won’t be the only club interested in McGinn this summer, and with two months still remaining before the new season gets underway, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Scotsman in the coming weeks.
