Newly-promoted Premier League side Nottingham Forest have opened talks with Manchester United for the transfer of goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

According to football transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson is of interest to newly-promoted Premier League side Nottingham Forest, who have initiated discussions to sign the England international.

Henderson fell down the pecking order at Old Trafford after briefly assuming the team’s goalkeeping duties in the second half of the 2020/21 season. David de Gea was struggling for consistency and had made a few costly errors, which had seen then-manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put Henderson in charge.

The Englishman then missed the start of the 2021/22 term due to illness, and De Gea picked up form to remain the side’s first-choice shot-stopper throughout the season. Early signs indicate that new boss Erik ten Hag is keen to continue with the Spaniard, which could see Henderson spend the majority of his time on the bench.

After playing just three matches for the Red Devils in the recently-concluded campaign, Henderson is looking for regular game-time, and a move seems to be on the cards. Newcastle United were reportedly eager to sign him on loan in January but United weren’t convinced.

The Magpies returned for Henderson this summer and reportedly agreed on personal terms with him. They were also ready to offer £15 million to secure his signature, but they now seem more interested in improving other areas first.

In the meantime, Nottingham Forest have now swooped in to sign Henderson from Manchester United, and the goalkeeper is also considering the possibility of joining them. As per Fabrizio Romano, an initial loan deal is being discussed between the two clubs, with Forest having the option of making the move permanent for around £20 million next year.

Nottingham Forest would sign Henderson as a replacement for Brice Samba, who has refused to sign a new contract and will be on his way out this summer.

Manchester United have seen quite a few players depart the club this summer as they prepare for an overhaul. Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard have all bid farewell to the club, while there are still question marks over the futures of the likes of Anthony Martial and Aaron Wan-Bissaka. And it seems like academy graduate Henderson will also be on the move imminently.
