Manchester United and Tottenham are reportedly in pole position to sign Newcastle United target Christian Eriksen this summer.

A recent report from Northern Echo has offered an update on Newcastle United’s market activity in the summer transfer window. The Magpies are keeping tabs on Christian Eriksen ahead of the new season and have even held talks with the player’s representatives over a potential move to St. James’ Park.

However, the report suggests Newcastle United are trailing Manchester United and Tottenham in the race to sign the Danish international. Both the Premier League giants have held more substantial talks with Eriksen’s agent and are in pole position to secure his services ahead of the new season.

Brentford have begrudgingly accepted defeat in the pursuit as well, knowing Eriksen is set for a move to a bigger club after a fruitful six-month spell in the Community Stadium. The Dane had initially joined the club in January on a short-term loan deal, in search of a way back into football following his heart condition.

The former Tottenhamo did not disappoint either. Registering five-goal involvements in 11 league outings, the playmaker performed superbly and helped the Bees retain their top-flight status in the league.

His performances have predictably alerted a slew of top clubs across Europe, including Manchester United. The club’s new manager Erik ten Hag had worked with Eriksen briefly when the playmaker returned to Ajax to train with the team, just before his move to Brentford.

The Manchester United boss wants Eriksen as part of his squad for next season, following the departures of Paul Pogba, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard, who has been subjected to a move to West Ham United this summer.

Newcastle United are another club keen on signing Eriksen. Although the Magpies are deeply concentrated on the pursuit of Hugo Ekitike, they are keeping tabs on the Dane, whose status as a free agent makes him a financially feasible option for the Tyneside outfit.

Eriksen could add more fuel to Newcastle United’s creative unit that has already excelled following the addition of Kieran Trippier. The Magpies also boast the services of Allan Saint-Maximin, Ryan Fraser and Miguel Almiron, though the latter could be set for an exit this summer.

However, despite the interest from Manchester United and Newcastle, one would expect Tottenham to remain in pole position to sign Eriksen. The player had spent the majority of his professional career in north London and has a strong relationship with coach Antonio Conte.

Tottenham, who are in the market for a playmaker in light of Giovani Lo Celso’s uncertain future, are expected to open the door for Eriksen to return to north London this summer and renew the offensive combination between him, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in the coming season.
