Premier League heavyweights Liverpool are reportedly prepared to offer Gavi a deal worth €9 million per year to prise him away from Barcelona this summer.

According to a report by La Porteria, Liverpool will be prepared to offer Gavi a deal worth €9 million per year to sign him from Barcelona in the summer transfer window. But the Spanish prodigy wants to remain at FC Barcelona, even though the two parties are no closer to reaching an agreement over a new contract.

Gavi has grabbed his golden opportunity with both hands to establish himself as a pivotal figure for club and country in the past year. The Spanish wonderkid made his first-team debut for Barcelona at the onset of the 2021/22 season amid a financial crisis at Camp Nou, with his exploits also earning him his bow for La Roja.

The 17-year-old wonderkid made 47 appearances for Barcelona this past season, chipping in with two goals and six assists. But Gavi’s Barcelona future is up in the air, as his contract runs out next year, and developments on the renewal front have been slow. Such a situation has captured the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, including Liverpool.

Liverpool did not bolster the midfield department last summer despite Georginio Wijnaldum’s departure as a free agent. The Reds instead chose to promote Harvey Elliott as a youngster, a decision that seems well-founded. But James Milner is in the twilight of his career and will not be a regular fixture for Liverpool next season despite signing a new one-year contract.

In addition, Jordan Henderson and former Barcelona midfielder Thiago Alcantara are both on the wrong side of 30. So pursuing a player like Gavi makes a world of sense for Liverpool, with the Reds prepared to trigger the €50 million release clause in his contract to prise him away from Barcelona.

But the Blaugrana will fight tooth and nail to keep hold of the Spanish prodigy beyond the summer transfer window, with recent reports claiming they had tabled an improved contract offer. However, Liverpool could table a lucrative €9 million-a-year contract to the teenage wonderkid, which easily usurps Barcelona’s proposal.

The Catalan giants have offered a deal worth €2 million per year to Gavi, who wants a contract that will hand him improved wages with every passing season. And while Liverpool’s €9 million-a-year proposal is appealing, Gavi wishes to remain at FC Barcelona, meaning the ball is now in their court.
