Liverpool have reportedly decided to end their interest in Barcelona midfield prodigy Gavi, as the midfielder is set to sign a new contract with the club.

According to SPORT, Premier League giants Liverpool have decided to call off their pursuit of Barcelona midfielder Gavi, as the teenage prodigy is poised to sign a new contract with the Catalan giants.

A product of the Barcelona youth academy, Gavi made his first-team breakthrough in the 2021/22 campaign at the tender age of 17. Despite being so young, the teenage prodigy soon became a regular in the starting XI at Camp Nou and finished the campaign with a total of 46 senior appearances, in which he scored two goals and set up six more.

Gavi has also become a mainstay in the Spanish national team and recently became the youngest-ever goalscorer for La Roja. The teenage prodigy has made quite the impression in his breakthrough campaign, managing to attract the interest of some of the biggest clubs across Europe, including Liverpool.

The Reds’ manager Jurgen Klopp is believed to be an admirer of Gavi and sees him as a perfect fit into his style and philosophy at Anfield. With Jordan Henderson, Thiago Alcantara and James Milner into their thirties, it is time for Liverpool to start future-proofing their midfield department, which makes Gavi an ideal target.

The 17-year-old’s contract situation served to add more fuel to the speculation. Gavi’s current deal with Barcelona expires in the summer of 2023 and has a release clause worth €50 million. And Liverpool were reportedly prepared to pay the release clause amount for the 17-year-old prodigious talent.

However, they have been forced to give up their chase of Gavi as the teenager is poised to sign a new contract with Barcelona. Talks with his agents had been ongoing for a while but not much progress was achieved. However, Barcelona tabled a fresh contract offer last week, which has set things in motion, and the Spaniard is now inching closer to an extension.

Once he signs the new deal, Gavi will be protected by a massive release clause of €1 billion. As a result, Liverpool have decided to end their interest in the 17-year-old Barcelona prodigy and are planning to turn their focus toward Leeds United star Kalvin Phillips as a potential alternative in midfield.
