La Liga heavyweights Real Madrid are reportedly considering cashing in on 26-year-old French defender Ferland Mendy this summer.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Defensa Central, Ferland Mendy’s time at Real Madrid could be coming to an end in the summer transfer window. The Merengues are weighing up the prospect of cashing in on the 26-year-old defender following Antonio Rudiger’s arrival from Chelsea in a Bosman move.

Ferland Mendy joined Real Madrid from Lyon in July 2019 and almost immediately established himself as the first-choice left-back at the Santiago Bernabeu. The French international has been ahead of Real Madrid captain Marcelo in the pecking order in the last three seasons, going from strength to strength in this period.

The 26-year-old has turned out 105 times for Real Madrid thus far while chipping in with five goals and nine assists. But Mendy faces an uncertain future at the Bernabeu heading into the summer transfer window, with Defensa Central claiming that Los Blancos might opt to cash in on him ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Antonio Rudiger’s arrival from Chelsea in a Bosman move this summer could change things drastically in Real Madrid’s defensive unit. Recent reports have claimed that Carlo Ancelotti will install Eder Militao and Rudiger as the first-choice central defensive pairing.

As a result, David Alaba will move out to the left-back berth, leaving Ferland Mendy in limbo in the 2022/23 season. Mendy will not have to compete with Marcelo after the Brazilian defender announced that he will leave Real Madrid as a free agent in the summer transfer window. But Alaba’s reincarnation as a left-back complicates matters for him.

Real Madrid can make a quick buck by selling Mendy while signing a cost-effective replacement like Fran Garcia. The former La Fabrica graduate is reportedly closing in on returning to Real Madrid, and his signing will enable Los Blancos to cash in on Mendy in the summer transfer window.

But the decision to sell Mendy will rest solely on Ancelotti’s decision on the framework of his team’s defensive unit. Things will get clearer during Real Madrid’s pre-season campaign, and it will be interesting to see if Mendy departs from the Santiago Bernabeu this summer.
