Liverpool have reportedly asked defensive outcast Ben Davies to find a new club ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Liverpool’s unlikely association with Ben Davies is set to come to an end, in the upcoming summer transfer window, reports Football Insider. The Premier League giants have asked the defender to find a new club ahead of the new season, as he is not included in Jurgen Klopp’s plans.

Formerly of Preston North End, Davies joined Liverpool at the start of 2021. He was more of a panic buy rather than a well-placed investment, as the club were struggling with an injury crisis at the time. The 26-year-old defender, therefore, was only brought in as a short-term cover.

Quite predictably, Davies failed to earn a single call-up to the Liverpool senior team during the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign. His role at the club dwindled further following the return of Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip from their respective injury spells.

The Reds even went on to sign Ibrahima Konate to further strengthen their ranks in the defensive unit. The addition of the former RB Leipzig starlet ushered in the downfall of Davies at Liverpool, with the Reds swiftly sending him out to Sheffield United on a year-long loan deal.

During his one-year association with the Championship outfit, the 26-year-old featured in 22 league matches. Although Davies was far from a first-team regular, the defender did not disappoint and had a role to play in helping the Blades qualify for the promotion play-off, only to lose to Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals.

Although Liverpool have given Davies the green light to leave Anfield in the summer, a return to Sheffield United is unlikely. The Blades are not in a position to fund a permanent move for the 26-year-old. Davies, though, should not find it difficult to attract a suitor given his credentials in the second division.

While it remains to be seen whether he can land a move to any of the Premier League clubs, he can certainly prove to be an attractive option for a Championship outfit. The recently-relegated clubs like Watford and Norwich City, in particular, could entertain the prospect of signing the Liverpool defender, as they look for an immediate return to the top flight.

Ben Davies might not be the only defender leaving Liverpool this summer, as the Reds are also open to offers for Nathaniel Phillips. Liverpool are looking for a fee of around £15 million for the services of the talented centre-back, with Bournemouth among the clubs keen on securing his signature.
