Ligue 1 giants Marseille are reportedly eyeing a loan move for Manchester City prospect Julian Alvarez.

According to Foot Mercato, Marseille are eager to complete a year-long loan deal for Julian Alvarez, who is set to join Manchester City this summer. The Argentine youngster, who currently plies his trade for River Plate, was signed by the Cityzens in January but was sent back to his parent club on loan.

The youngster will move permanently to Manchester this summer and will be with the Cityzens for the pre-season. Alvarez has scored eight goals and provided two assists in 11 league appearances for River Plate this season and has also scored six goals in the Copa Libertadores, all of which came in the Argentine giants’ latest group stage game against Alianza Lima.

Alvarez’s form is sure to excite Manchester City fans, who will also welcome Borussia Dortmund’s Erling Haaland this summer. The Norwegian striker’s move to the Etihad was confirmed a fortnight ago, and he is set to lead the club’s attacking line from next season.

Alvarez, who plays as a centre-forward, could thus struggle to get consistent game time under his belt. Marseille are aware of this and are ready to make an approach for a loan move. The Ligue 1 club will return to the Champions League next season and want to add reinforcements.

Manchester City chief executive Ferran Soriano had claimed last month that they have received ‘many offers’ for the 22-year-old prospect, but they will not send him out on loan. He had also confirmed that the Alvarez will go on the pre-season with the English champions.

“We’ve had many offers from clubs to loan Julian Alvarez, but he is not going to leave,” Soriano said (via Manchester Evening News) before continuing, “He will do pre-season with us and I think he will stay.”

Manager Pep Guardiola is also expected to have a say on the matter, and a lot could depend on how Alvarez fares in the pre-season and during training with the first team. If Manchester City do not deem him ready to be thrust into Premier League action, he could well be sent on loan, with Ligue 1 giants Marseille hoping to secure his services.
