Manchester United agree fee to sign Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie de Jong joined Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019 and has since endured a frustrating stint at Camp Nou. While the 25-year-old has been one of Barcelona’s most reliable performers in the last three years, the Catalan giants have not experienced much success during this period.

The Dutch midfielder has turned out 140 times for Barcelona thus far, chipping in with 13 goals and 17 assists. But de Jong faces an uncertain future at FC Barcelona despite his consistent performance level as the Blaugrana could sell him to raise funds for their summer transfer business. Such a situation has captured the attention of Manchester United.

The Red Devils are reportedly prioritising a summer move for de Jong as midfield reinforcement is necessary heading into the summer transfer window. Nemanja Matic has already confirmed that he will leave Manchester United ahead of the 2022/23 season, while Paul Pogba is poised to become a free agent in July.

The duo’s departure will leave new Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag short of options in the middle of the park, which is why he has identified de Jong as a viable target.
