Premier League giants Manchester United will reportedly send scouts to watch Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes in action.

As per journalist Julio Miguel Neto on Rubro News channel, as quoted by Sport Witness, Manchester United are preparing for a scouting mission to watch Flamengo midfielder Joao Gomes. The report claims that two Manchester United officials will travel to Brazil in the coming weeks to scout the 21-year-old.

There is no clarification over how much the Red Devils will need to pay to sign the Brazilian midfielder, or how much sum they have kept aside for him. However, Miguel Neto did claim that Flamengo are open to selling Gomes if the right offer arrives in the summer.

The 21-year-old central midfielder is currently vying for a spot in the Flamengo midfield with on-loan Manchester United playmaker Andreas Pereira. While the Manchester United loanee spent more time on the pitch than Gomes last season, Gomes has been afforded slightly more playing time than the former this season.

Pereira, however, has not been convincing enough for the Rio Di Janeiro based club, who have the option to sign him permanently for €10 million this summer. But as per Miguel Neto, it is unlikely that they will exercise that option as they do not wish to invest big in a player who has not been able to impress.

If Manchester United do like Gomes eventually, the two clubs could come to an agreement. It remains to be seen if any potential deal will involve both the players or if the Red Devils prepare a separate move for the 21-year-old which does not involve Pereira.

The Premier League giants are entering a new era under manager Erik ten Hag. They had their worst Premier League season in 2021/22, in terms of points garnered, and extended their trophyless streak to five years now.

The Red Devils are also preparing for a mass exodus, with the likes of Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic, Edinson Cavani, Juan Mata and Jesse Lingard all set to leave the club this summer. That also means that Manchester United will add a few players to their squad, with all three areas – defence, midfield and attack – needing significant improvement ahead of the next season.
