Mohamed Elneny is reportedly set to extend his stay with Arsenal and sign a short-term deal to remain at the Emirates.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Arsenal are set to hand Mohamed Elneny a new short-term, one-year deal with the option of another season, with the Egyptian midfielder more than happy to commit his immediate future to the club. The 29-year-old’s contract was up in the summer, and he is now set to prolong his stay at the Emirates.
Mohamed Elneny has been praised for his performances in Arsenal’s last seven games, despite only coming out from the cold late in the season. The player has been at the club since 2015, and he is now on the verge of extending his stay at the Emirates.
Before the Premier League game against Chelsea back in April, Elneny had started just one match, the 3-2 defeat to Manchester United at Old Trafford. He was usually available as a late substitute otherwise, as Arteta utilised the Egyptian to see out games.
However, after Thomas Partey picked up an injury and Arsenal lost three successive matches to Crystal Palace, Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton, Arteta decided to bring Elneny out from the cold and pair him with Granit Xhaka at the heart of the midfield. The Egyptian international had done exceptionally well to revive the top-four challenge, in which Arsenal ultimately fell short.

Elneny was named Man of the Match in Arsenal’s final game of the season, as the Gunners thrashed Everton 5-1 at the Emirates. As soon as the season-ending formalities concluded, news emerged that Elneny was to be handed a new deal, with David Ornstein of The Athletic breaking the story.
Arsenal were already considering handing the experienced midfielder a new deal and had subsequently opened talks with Elneny about it. However, extending his stay will be a mere formality when the season ends, and now the Egyptian is ready to pen a short-term extension.
The duration of the new deal is reportedly one year, with Arsenal having the option of extending it by another season. Meanwhile, Arsenal are also looking to extend Eddie Nketiah’s contract, although they may see Alexandre Lacazette leave when his contract expires in June.
Elneny’s extension should have no bearing on Arsenal’s transfer plans, which include signing a new central midfielder. Youri Tielemans, Arthur Melo and Ruben Neves have been linked with the north Londoners, as they look to embark on another crucial transfer window this summer.
