Chelsea are reportedly closely monitoring the situation of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowksi, who is a priority target for Barcelona.

According to GOAL, Chelsea could be set to rival Barcelona in the race to sign Bayern Munich superstar Robert Lewandowski, who is pushing for an exit in the summer transfer window.

Lewandowski is set to complete his eighth year at Bayern Munich this summer and has decided that the time is right for him to take up a new challenge in his career. The 33-year-old has enjoyed another prolific campaign with Die Roten, plundering 35 goals in the Bundesliga to help his team win the league title and seal the Torjagerkanone.

But with his contract expiring next year, Lewandowski has made it clear that he does not wish to sign an extension and is angling for an exit. Barcelona have been credited with a serious interest in the Poland international. The Catalan giants are on the lookout for an ace marksman to add to their ranks to lead their project under Xavi Hernandez.

Barcelona did sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in January, and the former Arsenal captain has performed exceptionally. But with the futures of Martin Braithwaite, Luuk de Jong and Memphis Depay uncertain, Barcelona need another striker on their roster and signing a top-quality player like Lewandowski is their priority for the summer.

However, Barcelona will now have to contend with competition from Chelsea in the race to sign the Bayern Munich superstar. The Blues are still under sanctions placed by UK Government, which prohibits them from getting involved in any transfer activities. However, with their ownership situation seemingly close to being resolved, plans are being drawn up for the summer.

A new striker is a priority for Chelsea as well, considering that their last two marquee signings in the position have underwhelmed. Indeed, both Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku have failed to produce the desired level of performance for the west London side, and at least one of them or both could be moved on in the summer.

So, Thomas Tuchel’s side will need a world-class striker as a replacement, and Lewandowski has emerged as a target, with Chelsea being long-time admirers of the Poland international. The Blues are reportedly keeping a close watch on the developing situation involving him and Bayern and could launch a move once the sanctions are lifted.

However, Bayern Munich are insistent that Lewandowski will not be sold despite him rejecting a contract proposal. It would mean that they risk losing him for nothing next year. So, it remains to be seen how the German champions decide to proceed with the situation even as Chelsea and Barcelona circle for Lewandowski’s signing.
