Barcelona midfield prodigy Nico Gonzalez is on the radars of Premier League club Wolves, with superagent Jorge Mendes seeking clarity on the youngster’s future.

According to SPORT, Barcelona are debating over the future of midfielder Nico Gonzalez, who has several offers to leave Camp Nou on loan or permanently in the upcoming transfer window. Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers are among the sides interested in the 20-year-old.

A product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia youth setup, Nico was handed his first-team debut by former manager Ronald Koeman in the early parts of the ongoing campaign. The 20-year-old has largely impressed whenever given a chance, but the opportunities have largely dried up in the second half of the season.

Indeed, current manager Xavi Hernandez has preferred to use Frenkie de Jong, Sergio Busquets and Pedri as his starting midfielders. In the absence of the latter due to injury, the 42-year-old tactician has turned to Gavi to fill in, leaving Nico to warm the benches or make substitute appearances now and then.

With Barcelona set to add Franck Kessie in the summer transfer window and planning to sign a long-term replacement for Sergio Busquets as well, Nico’s situation has become somewhat unclear. While the Catalans continue to rate him highly, his game-time could be affected even more next season.

The 20-year-old’s representative, Jorge Mendes, recently had a meeting with the Barcelona officials, during which the youngster’s future was a major discussion. The superagent wants some clarity on how Xavi wants to use Nico next season, given the plethora of midfield talent at Camp Nou, while also informing the club officials that the academy ace has options to leave the club.

One such team who are interested in Nico are Wolves. The Premier League club have strong ties with Jorge Mendes and could potentially look to utilise that to lure the 20-year-old Barcelona prospect to the Molineux.

Amid question marks over the future of Ruben Neves, who, coincidentally, is one of Barcelona’s top targets to replace Busquets in the long run, a promising midfield prospect like Nico can be a good addition to Bruno Lage’s setup. The report does not mention whether the Black Country outfit want the 20-year-old on loan or permanently.

Nevertheless, Nico’s future at Camp Nou is currently under discussion, and all options, including handing him a new contract, will be considered before a final decision is made. It remains to be seen if the 20-year-old, who rejected Manchester City in the past to stay at Barcelona, will still be at the club come next season.
