La Liga heavyweights Barcelona have reportedly put 28-year-old Dutch forward Memphis Depay up for sale heading into the summer transfer window.

A report by Spanish publication SPORT reveals Barcelona’s plans for Memphis Depay and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang heading into the summer transfer window. The Catalan giants are ready to part with the 28-year-old forward, but Aubameyang firmly remains a part of their plans for the 2022/23 season.

Memphis Depay joined Barcelona in a Bosman move last summer after running down his contract with Lyon. The Dutch international started his stint with the Blaugrana strongly before fitness issues troubled him midway through the season. And following Barcelona’s busy January transfer window, Depay has had to share game-time with Ferran Torres.

Still, the 28-year-old is Barcelona’s top scorer this season after amassing 12 goals and two assists in 35 appearances across all competitions thus far. But Depay faces an uncertain future at Camp Nou, with his contract running out next year, compelling Barcelona to weigh up the prospect of cashing in on him in the summer transfer window.

Depay has insisted that he wants to fight for his place in the side and remain at FC Barcelona for several years. But according to SPORT, the Catalan giants are ready to put the Dutch forward up for sale in the summer transfer window rather than risk losing him for free next year.

The latest developments come in the wake of suggestions that pointed towards the Blaugrana planning to offer Depay a new contract. But by putting him up for sale, Barcelona could balance their books while funding crucial transfers as Xavi Hernandez looks to continue remodelling the squad.

Selling Depay could be the correct decision, considering Ansu Fati’s return leaves Xavi with two options for the left-wing berth, the other being Ferran Torres. And with Barcelona in the market for a striker and a right-winger, Depay might find himself in a spot of bother, especially considering the 2022 FIFA World Cup is on the horizon.

So Depay leaving Barcelona could serve both parties well in the summer transfer window, with the 28-year-old having several clubs across Europe vying for his signature. But following his recent comments, one cannot rule out the Dutch forward staying put at Camp Nou either.
