Manchester United have reportedly placed Pau Torres on their summer transfer shortlist and could decide soon over approaching Villarreal with a potential offer.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United are considering making a move for Pau Torres in the summer, and the defender could be considered a possible target. A firm decision could be made in the coming weeks with Erik ten Hag’s approval, although the Red Devils need to be wary of competitors are vying for the Spanish international’s signature.

Pau Torres has been one of the standout players at Villarreal in the last two seasons after some impressive performances for the Yellow Submarine. The Spaniard helped the team win the UEFA Europa League title last term while managing to reach the Champions League semi-finals this season.

Naturally, there has been significant interest in the centre-back coming from the Premier League. Tottenham and Chelsea have been among those mentioned as possible suitors, with Manchester United also looking at Torres to solve their defensive issues.

Tottenham have been confident about concluding a deal, but Villarreal’s €55 million asking price could pose a problem for the north Londoners, who also have other areas to strengthen in the summer.

Chelsea are touted to make a move for Torres as their ownership issues have been resolved. The Blues are on the verge of losing Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. Cesar Azpilicueta could also depart, which may force Thomas Tuchel to bring in new central defenders in the coming transfer window.

However, Manchester United and Manchester City are also keen on signing Torres, and it may seem like the Red Devils could be serious about approaching. Multiple factors are blocking the club from submitting an enquiry as they await the arrival of new manager Erik ten Hag from Ajax, while there are impending changes to be made behind the scenes.

Torres could be available for around €55 million due to a release clause in his contract. The price tag may not be a problem for big clubs like Manchester United. However, whichever side is quicker in approaching might get to sign the Spanish international first.

There may still be some time left within the corridors of Manchester United before they make a concrete decision about Torres. The Red Devils have a stable of top-quality centre-backs and may have to move out some of their existing options in the position.

Harry Maguire’s future could be in doubt following a miserable season, and ten Hag will need to make a decision on his future. Hence, the matter with Pau Torres remains complicated, although the situation could become clearer in the weeks to come.
