Barcelona are reportedly prioritising a move for Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso.

According to a Mundo Deportivo report, Barcelona have made Chelsea full-back Marcos Alonso a priority signing for the upcoming summer transfer window. Xavi is eager to strengthen the left side of his defence and has made Alonso his ‘number one’ target.

The aforementioned report claims that the Blaugrana have been trying to sign Alonso since the ‘first quarter of the season’. The left-back isn’t the only Chelsea defender linked with a move to Barcelona as Cesar Azpilicueta is also reportedly on the club’s radar.

Alonso fell down the pecking order over the last couple of seasons owing to bad form and injuries, but he has had a consistent run in the team this term due to Ben Chilwell’s injury. In all, he has made 42 appearances for the Blues, scoring four and assisting five goals this season.

Alonso has just a year left on his contract with the Blues and is keen on a move away from the club with Chelsea willing to sell. He recently admitted that he would ‘love’ to play in Spain, something he has always wished while stressing that all his focus is on the ongoing season.

Alonso told AS in March: “I would love to play in La Liga, all my life I have wanted to play and be here in Spain, but the circumstances have been different and not everything has depended on me. At the moment I am focused on this season and what has to be, will be.”

The Spain international has played one match in La Liga, representing his boyhood club Real Madrid. But the Los Blancos academy product could go on to represent Barcelona and join a unique list of players to feature for the two Spanish giants and arch-rivals.

Alonso is reportedly keen to join Barcelona and is excited by the prospect of playing for the Catalan giants. Xavi, too, is believed to be an admirer of the player and believes Alonso will be a great addition. The Blaugrana just have Jordi Alba as their left-back option and Alonso will add some much-needed depth. It now remains to be seen if the move sees the light of the day come summer.
