Newcastle United are reportedly plotting a blockbuster summer swoop for highly-rated Bayer Leverkusen hitman Patrik Schick.

According to the Mirror, Bayer Leverkusen forward Patrik Schick has emerged as one of the names on Newcastle United’s striker wishlist as Eddie Howe looks to add more firepower to the attacking department this summer.

Newcastle United are set to embark on a crucial summer transfer window. While many expect them to build on their £94 million January spending spree, Howe has downplayed the possibility of a massive rebuild but insisted that the Magpies will be active.

Strengthening the centre-forward position remains at the forefront of the manager’s plans, with Benfica sensation Darwin Nunez being intensively scouted by the northeast giants. The report mentions that Bayer Leverkusen’s Patrik Schick is a potential alternative should the Magpies fail in their pursuit of the Uruguayan striker.

Schick is one of the most sought-after striker commodities in Europe that several top clubs will be sniffing around for this summer. It is easy to see why he would be so appealing to Newcastle. The 26-year-old is having a brilliant campaign in Germany, banging in 22 goals from 25 Bundesliga appearances, trailing only Bayern Munich icon Robert Lewandowski (34) in the scoring charts.

This spectacular run of form comes after Schick managed five goals in five games for the Czech Republic at the UEFA Euro 2020 last summer. The Leverkusen forward, who is under contract until 2025 in Germany, has hit his strides following uninspiring spells at AS Roma and RB Leipzig.

And the red-hot scoring form he has discovered this season has led to speculation about his future, with Newcastle one of many sides to have been linked with the lanky striker.

The Magpies’ interest in the player goes back to mid-January when they were desperate to sign a centre-forward. But ultimately, a deal was always going to be difficult to facilitate, with Leverkusen looking to secure Champions League football for next season.

The upcoming summer window, though, could be a whole different scenario and the German club might listen to offers, even though CEO Fernando Carro has recently ruled out any potential sale of the in-form striker. Nonetheless, to be rubbing shoulders with Lewandowski and Erling Haaland is a clear indicator of Schick’s talent, and the 26-year-old could provide an added goal-scoring threat to Howe’s side.

With Chris Wood goal-shy up top and Callum Wilson injury-prone, Newcastle need to strengthen their striker roster. Schick, to that end, can be a top addition. He is a tall, strong, physical workhorse with exceptional technique who would undoubtedly improve the Magpies’ potency in the final third if he could be persuaded to join them this summer.
