Robert Lewandowski is reportedly keen on leaving Bayern Munich to join Barcelona in the summer, with the Bavarian giants opposed to a transfer.

According to a report by Sky Sport Germany, Robert Lewandowski wants to leave Bayern Munich after the latest round of contract renewal talks between the two parties. The Bundesliga champions are opposed to the idea of letting the 33-year-old forward leave, but he wishes to join Barcelona.

Robert Lewandowski will go down in history as one of the greatest strikers ever after over a decade of scoring goals for fun for Bundesliga clubs Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich. Despite being in his thirties, the Polish international has been steadily improving with each passing season.

The 33-year-old has amassed a brilliant record of 49 goals and six assists in 44 appearances across all competitions thus far this term. But Lewandowski’s contract situation has put Bayern Munich in a spot of bother as his deal runs out next year. While the Bundesliga champions are scrambling to extend the player’s stay at the Allianz Arena, he has emerged as a summer target for Barcelona.

Barcelona will need to invest in a top-class striker in the summer transfer window, as Luuk de Jong will return to Sevilla for good once his loan deal ends. At the same time, Martin Braithwaite will likely embark on a new adventure where he can get regular game-time, leaving Xavi Hernandez with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the only natural striker at his disposal.

While Aubameyang has made a positive impact since joining Barcelona from Arsenal this past winter, going into a season with just one natural centre-forward is suicidal. Lewandowski has thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, with recent reports claiming the two parties held talks last week.

According to Sky Sport Germany, Lewandowski wants to leave Bayern Munich to join Barcelona, despite the Bundesliga outfit’s best efforts to keep him. Such a development has come as a boost for the Catalan giants and their hopes to prise the 33-year-old forward away from the Allianz Arena.

But several Bayern Munich board members have already asserted that Lewandowski will not depart from the Bundesliga club in the summer. So it will be interesting to see if Barcelona can secure the services of the Polish forward, especially considering he is keen on joining them in the summer.
