Newcastle United prepared to offer €6 million-a-year deal to Rafael Leao

Newcastle United are reportedly willing to hand Rafael Leao a lucrative €6 million a year contract in order to snap him up this summer.

A recent report from La Repubblica has offered an update on the future of Rafael Leao. The AC Milan attacker has become one of the most in-demand players in Europe, with many expecting him to make the move to either the Premier League or Ligue 1 in the coming season.

Newcastle United and Paris Saint-Germain are two of the clubs in contention to sign the Portuguese international after the end of the season. Milan are determined to keep hold of their prized attacker by increasing his current €1.5 million per year salary to €4 million per year. His current deal at San Siro expires in 2024.

The Serie A giants, though, are facing fierce competition from Newcastle United and PSG. Both the clubs are reportedly willing to offer a handsome €6 million-a-year contract in an attempt to prise him away from San Siro in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Newcastle United’s interest in Leao stems from the club’s plans of adding real quality to the offensive unit this summer. Having enjoyed immense success since January, the Magpies are poised to flex their financial muscle once again in an attempt to further strengthen their squad and build a team capable of competing for the European places.

Leao fits the bill for Newcastle United, given his goalscoring prowess and dynamism in the final third. The Portuguese attacker has enjoyed immense success in Serie A this term, and has been involved in a total of 20 goals in all competitions.

Leao’s performances in front of goal have been critical in helping AC Milan lodge their Serie A title bid. But it appears his spell at San Siro could soon come to an end, with Newcastle United considering him as a potential upgrade over Chris Wood next season.

Rafael Leao could indeed offer more goalscoring threat in the final third for Newcastle United. His combination play with Allan Saint-Maximin and Ryan Fraser could add a lot of spice to the team’s attacking frontline. The Magpies could further improve themselves if they can land another top target in Victor Osimhen.

Signing Leao could be a tricky operation, though. Even if Newcastle are able to convince the player with their €6 million-a-year contract offer, AC Milan are reportedly holding out for a staggering €70 million fee for their prized attacker. So it will be interesting to see what the future holds for the Portuguese international this summer.
