Chelsea are reportedly prepared to open contract negotiations with star midfielder Mason Mount amidst the uncertainty surrounding the ownership situation.

According to The Guardian, Premier League giants Chelsea are all set to hold contract talks with midfielder Mason Mount ahead of the 2022/23 season.

The English international came through the ranks at Chelsea and is a Blue through and through. He received his big break under former manager Frank Lampard and has since gone from strength to strength.

Mount has so far made 157 appearances for the west Londoners, scoring 29 times and assisting 30 goals. A member of the 2021 UEFA Champions League-winning Chelsea side, Mount has proven his ability to compete at the highest level.

At just 23, Mount is yet to enter his prime and has everything in his arsenal to become a world-class player. Chelsea, for their part, are keen for the Englishman to spend the best years of his career at Stamford Bridge and are ready to open negotiations regarding a new deal.

The west Londoners are currently embroiled in an ownership saga following the sanctions imposed on Russian oligarch and soon to be ex-Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich. Irrespective of who ends up in charge, it is essential that Chelsea retain their top prospects.

Mount and Reece James are among those who bleed Blue, and losing them would be difficult to even think about. With several key stars such as Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen and possibly even Cesar Azpilicueta set to leave, it is essential Chelsea ensure stability in the squad for the upcoming seasons.

N’Golo Kante and Jorginho are not getting any younger, while Mateo Kovacic can be limited when it comes to contributing to the attack. Mount’s presence adds that offensive impetus from the midfield. His ability to make runs behind opposition defences adds much to the Chelsea attacking buildup.

While it is a stretch at this moment in time to compare him to Lampard, the 23-year-old certainly has the potential to become Chelsea’s midfield lynchpin in the years to come. Mount’s current Chelsea deal runs until 2024, and it remains to be seen how the club approach extending it in the months to come, provided the ownership situation gets resolved quickly.

Liverpool and Manchester City are reportedly keeping a close eye on developments and have shown interest in securing Mount’s services. Whether his future lies at Chelsea or elsewhere remains to be seen.
