Manchester City are reportedly keen on Stefan de Vrij and could compete with Tottenham for the Inter Milan defender.

According to Calciomercato.it, Manchester City are interested in signing Stefan de Vrij in the summer, with Inter Milan willing to sanction a sale for the defender. Tottenham are also keen on the Dutchman, who has a year left in his deal at San Siro.

Important decisions are being planned at San Siro, with the Nerazzurri likely to shuffle their pack in the window. There could be a few outgoings, which may indicate the club are still not over their financial troubles.

They sold Romelu Lukaku and Achraf Hakimi last season to balance their books, and there could be a few more similar departures in the summer. One of them could be Stefan de Vrij, who is entering the last year of his contract.

Inter Milan are pondering bringing Glesion Bremer from Torino to replace one of their centre-halves. Manager Simone Inzaghi would like to keep hold of Alessandro Bastoni and Milan Skriniar in the team, which leaves de Vrij dispensable.

Tottenham have been keen on the Dutchman for a considerable period, as Antonio Conte wants the defender to shore up his backline in north London. The Italian boss wants to build the squad to make them title challengers next season.

However, Tottenham now face tough competition from Premier League champions Manchester City. The Premier League champions have a fantastic stable of central defenders and one would wonder why they may show an interest in a 30-year-old.

The requirement may be to bring in an experienced head at the back, and if one defender has to leave the Etihad, it could be Nathan Ake. The former Bournemouth and Chelsea centre-back has played the least number of games among the other players in the position and seems the likeliest to move on in the summer.

As a result, Pep Guardiola could be in the market for a new centre-back, with links to Pau Torres from Villarreal. Considering Manchester City are planning to spend lavishly on Erling Haaland, they may be cautious in overpaying for a defender in the window, meaning they could be looking at de Vrij as a cheaper alternative.

However, the report insists that Manchester City and Tottenham are willing to pay €40 million for the Dutchman. Considering de Vrij only has a year left on his deal, Inter could settle for a lower price to let him depart San Siro.

It does seem like de Vrij could be allowed to leave in the next window as it may be the best opportunity for Inter Milan to profit from the defender’s sale. Whether he joins Manchester City or Tottenham remains to be seen, although he could be a solid addition to either side.
