Frenkie de Jong is reportedly considering leaving Barcelona in the summer transfer window amid links with Manchester United.
According to a report by Spanish publication MARCA, Frenkie de Jong could call it quits at Barcelona in the summer transfer window. The Dutch international is a target for Manchester United, with Barcelona demanding around €75 million to part with him ahead of the 2022/23 season.
Frenkie de Jong completed a dream move when he joined Barcelona from Ajax in July 2019. While the Catalan giants have blown hot and cold over the last three years, the 24-year-old has remained a consistent performer apart from a few issues during the first couple of months under the tutelage of Xavi Hernandez.
The Dutch international has enjoyed a solid 2021/22 campaign, chipping in with four goals and five assists in 42 appearances across all competitions thus far. But de Jong is not entirely settled at FC Barcelona and is weighing up the prospect of calling it quits at Camp Nou in the summer transfer window. Such a development has come as a boost for Manchester United.
The interest from Manchester United comes in the wake of Paul Pogba’s situation at Old Trafford. The 2018 FIFA World Cup winner is destined to leave Manchester United as a free agent in the summer transfer window, bringing an end to an underwhelming six-year stint with the Red Devils.
Pogba’s departure will leave Manchester United shorn of quality in the creative midfield unit, with Bruno Fernandes the only other playmaker in the first-team squad. Frenkie de Jong has thus emerged as a viable target for the Premier League heavyweights, who are pulling out all the stops to prise him away from Barcelona.
Initial reports suggested that Barcelona would not entertain the idea of selling de Jong in the summer transfer window. But it looks like things are changing rapidly, with the Blaugrana slapping a €75 million price tag on the 24-year-old.
