Chelsea have reportedly joined the race to sign Villarreal defender Pau Torres and will rival Manchester City and Manchester United for his signature.

According to Fichajes, Chelsea are now ready to rival Manchester City and Manchester United for the signing of Villarreal defender Pau Torres. The Blues are in the market for a central defensive signing as they are set to lose two of their senior centre-backs.

Both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen’s respective contracts with the Blues expire this summer and the club have failed to tie them down to new contracts. The German defender is set to join Real Madrid and has reportedly agreed on a four-year deal. On the other hand, Christensen is reported to have a verbal agreement with Barcelona over a summer move.

With Chelsea losing two first-team centre-backs at once, signing replacements is their top-most priority for the summer. They have been linked with multiple defenders from all around Europe and Pau Torres has emerged as another option for them.

But the Blues aren’t the only side interested in the Spain international, who has been in sensational form for Unai Emery’s side this season and has played a crucial role in their Champions League semi-final run. The likes of Manchester City and Manchester United are also courting Torres.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola is believed to be a big admirer of the 25-year-old and has reportedly asked the club’s board to get the defender on board, even though he has three quality options in Aymeric Laporte, Ruben Dias and John Stones.

Manchester United, on the other hand, have bigger problems to solve. The Red Devils will welcome Erik ten Hag as their new manager ahead of the next season and the Dutch tactician has a huge task at hand. The squad needs a complete rebuild with multiple outgoings lined up. Defence, too, is an area of concern, especially with the erratic form of club captain Harry Maguire.

Torres has proven himself at the toughest of stages and still has seven to eight years of top-level football left in him. The defender will have two years remaining on his contract with Villarreal after the current season but reports claim the Yellow Submarine could be open to the idea of selling him.

With three of the biggest clubs in England vying to sign the Spanish international, it will be interesting to see what the upcoming transfer window holds for Torres.
