Premier League giants Chelsea are reportedly showing interest in RB Leipzig centre-back Josko Gvardiol, who is also a target for Tottenham.

According to English journalist Nathan Gissing, Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel is believed to be a big admirer of RB Leipzig’s centre-back Josko Gvardiol and a summer move for the Tottenham target cannot be ruled out. Chelsea are in the market for a central defensive signing as they are set to lose both Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen on free deals.

While Rudiger has reportedly agreed on a four-year deal with Real Madrid, Christensen is on his way to Barcelona with multiple reports claiming that the two parties have a verbal agreement. With two centre-backs on their way out of the club, and Cesar Azpilicueta and Thiago Silva into their thirties, Chelsea are desperate for defensive reinforcements ahead of the next season.

Gvardiol has emerged as a new target as Thomas Tuchel has been impressed by the Croatian international, who is also a target for Leeds United and Tottenham, in the Bundesliga. The 20-year-old joined Leipzig just last year in an €18 million move from Dinamo Zagreb and could be on the move again if he maintains the level of his performance.

The young defender assumed a starting role immediately and has so far made 42 appearances for the German club across competitions. He has also scored two and assisted three goals. Gvardiol looks comfortable with the ball and is not shy of foraying forward to open into the attacking avenues for his side.

The 20-year-old plays on the left of a back-three under Domenico Tedesco at Leipzig and has also been deployed at left-back. These are traits that would suit Tuchel’s system, and it comes as no surprise that the Chelsea manager is a fan of the young defender.

In addition to Chelsea, Gvardiol is also a target for Tottenham, with Antonio Conte keen on making central defensive reinforcements in the summer transfer window. However, he is completely focused on doing well for the Bundesliga side and will not think of a potential move before the end of the ongoing season.

Gvardiol will still have four years left on his Leipzig contract after this season, which could make him a costly buy for Chelsea and Tottenham. But it will be interesting to see if the two London giants can turn the Croat’s head in the coming months.
