Manchester United could reportedly table an offer worth €65 million to sign Serbian midfield powerhouse Sergej Milinkovic from Serie A club Lazio.

According to a report by Italian outlet Calciomercato, Manchester United could soon take a decisive step in the pursuit of Sergej Milinkovic-Savic. The Premier League heavyweights have readied a bid worth €65 million to snap up the Lazio midfield powerhouse in the summer transfer window.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has come leaps and bounds since joining Lazio from KRC Genk in August 2015. The Serbian international has made massive strides in the last seven years, establishing himself as one of the best midfielders in Serie in this period.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a solid 2021/22 campaign, amassing nine goals and 12 assists in 43 appearances thus far this season. But Milinkovic-Savic could leave Lazio in the summer transfer window to search for greener pastures. And such a situation has captured the attention of several European bigwigs, with Manchester United one of his prospective suitors.

The Red Devils hold a long-standing interest in Milinkovic-Savic, having made previous attempts to prise the Lazio midfielder away from the Serie A club. But with Paul Pogba destined to leave as a free agent in the summer transfer window, Milinkovic-Savic has emerged as a viable option to fill the Frenchman’s void.

The 27-year-old has drawn comparisons with Pogba in the last few years, and he now has the chance to replace the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner. But Manchester United will need to be wary of the threat from Paris Saint-Germain, with the newly-crowned Ligue 1 winners desperate to bolster their midfield unit.

Like Manchester United, PSG could table a bid worth €65 million to snap up the Serbian midfield powerhouse in the summer transfer window. That offer is close to the asking price Lazio will demand to part with Milinkovic-Savic ahead of the 2022/23 season.

It will be interesting to see if a €65 million bid does the trick for Manchester United, as they get set to start a rebuilding phase under the tutelage of Erik ten Hag. But with UEFA Champions League qualification highly unlikely, Manchester United might fall behind PSG in the race to sign the 27-year-old from Serie A club Lazio.
