Premier League champions Manchester City are reportedly in the driver’s seat to sign Enzo Fernandez, a target for Real Madrid and Manchester United.

According to a report by Sports Illustrated, Manchester City and Manchester United are poised to launch the offensive to sign Enzo Fernandez in the summer transfer window. But the Premier League champions are the favourites to land the River Plate midfielder, a target for Real Madrid.

Enzo Fernandez has been with River Plate for over a decade and a half but finally established a foothold in the club’s first-team setup last season. The 21-year-old has since gone from strength to strength and kick-started the 2022 season strongly.

The Argentina midfielder has four goals and three assists in 11 appearances across all competitions, an impressive tally for a box-to-box midfielder. Fernandez’s exploits have not gone unnoticed, with some of the most high profile clubs in Europe, including Real Madrid, Manchester City and Manchester United, setting their sights on him.

The interest from Real Madrid comes in the wake of the advancing years of Luka Modric and Toni Kroos, with the ageing midfield stalwarts approaching the final phases of their respective careers. But while Modric and Kroos might be able to hand around for a few more years, Real Madrid will need to invest in a central midfielder this summer due to the uncertainties surrounding the futures of Dani Ceballos and Isco.

As for Manchester City, the reigning Premier League champions will have to delve into the market for a midfield reinforcement following Fernandinho’s shocking announcement. The Brazilian midfielder will leave Manchester City in the summer, forcing Pep Guardiola to find a replacement. Enzo Fernandez has thus emerged as a viable target for the Citizens.

Meanwhile, Manchester United will need to sign a long-term replacement for Paul Pogba, who will likely depart from Old Trafford as a free agent in the summer. As a result, the Red Devils have set their sights on Enzo Fernandez. But Manchester United and Real Madrid might be fighting a losing battle, with Manchester City the front-runner to land the Argentine midfielder.

While Manchester United and Manchester City are readying offers to snap up the 21-year-old, the Premier League champions hold the aces in the race to sign him due to their strong relations with River Plate. It will be interesting to see if Manchester United can do anything to usurp their rivals or if Real Madrid can claw back in pursuit of the player.
