Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready to step up their pursuit of Peterborough United defender Ronnie Edwards this summer.

According to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur have intensified their pursuit of Ronnie Edwards. The 19-year-old Peterborough centre-back has emerged as one of their many defensive targets for the summer, with the club reportedly weighing up a fresh move in an attempt to blow other clubs out of the race.

Formerly of Barnet, Edwards is considered one of the best defensive talents in the English second division. The English defender has been one of the breakout stars in the league, having become an ever-present figure in the club’s defensive unit. He has made 28 league appearances so far, although his performances have not helped Peterborough stay out of the drop zone.

Indeed, the Posh are languishing at the rock bottom of the Championship table. There are very little hopes of potential survival, with the club also having the most leaky defensive record by quite a margin, after conceding a total of 81 goals in 40 league outings.

Edwards has been one of the few bright points in an otherwise dire campaign for Peterborough. The 19-year-old has impressed the onlookers with his defensive skills and maturity. Standing at 1.80m, the 19-year-old English defender might not boast a strong physique, but he can make up for it with his athleticism and work ethic.

Tottenham have been keeping an eye on Ronnie Edwards’s progress for quite some time now. It appears the Lilywhites have identified the defender as an ideal replacement for Joe Rodon, who is reportedly keen on leaving the club after falling behind in the pecking order.

Tottenham are likely to offload Japhet Tanganga as well, whereas there are question marks over the consistency of players such as Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez. The addition of a Championship talent like Edwards, in that regard, could prove to be beneficial for a club lagging behind rivals in terms of youth development.

Edwards, though, certainly is not the only option for Tottenham this summer. Spurs are keeping close tabs on the development of German talent Nico Schlotterbeck, although the SC Freiburg starlet is more than likely to join Borussia Dortmund in the new season.

Another potential target for Tottenham could be RB Leipzig’s Josko Gvardiol. The Bundesliga giants, though, are unlikely to offload their star player anytime soon, especially after losing Ibrahima Konate and Dayot Upamecano last summer.
