Mohamed Salah is reportedly set to commit his long-term future to Liverpool, thereby handing Barcelona a major blow in his pursuit.

According to a report by Daily Mirror, Barcelona will miss out on securing the services of Mohamed Salah in the summer transfer window. The Egyptian forward is close to reaching an agreement with Liverpool over a bumper new long-term contract worth nearly £500,000 per week.

Mohamed Salah has been nothing short of a revelation since joining Liverpool from AS Roma in July 2017. The 29-year-old hit the ground running at Anfield, immediately establishing himself as a pivotal figure for the Reds. Since then, he has been instrumental in guiding Liverpool in one of their most successful periods ever.

The Egyptian forward has enjoyed a fantastic 2021/22 campaign thus far, amassing 28 goals and ten assists in 37 appearances across all competitions. But Liverpool had been sweating over Salah’s long-term future, with his contract running out in a little over a year. And the situation captured the attention of Barcelona.

The interest from Barcelona stems from the urgent need to fill the void left by Lionel Messi’s shocking departure last summer. While Xavi Hernandez has guided Barcelona to a stable footing in the second half of the ongoing campaign, signing a prolific forward is the need of the hour for the Blaugrana.

To that end, Erling Haaland had initially emerged as the priority target for Barcelona. But the Catalan giants are in no position to compete with Real Madrid and Manchester City in the race to sign the Borussia Dortmund striker, which is why they have turned their attention towards alternate targets.

Salah had thus emerged as a viable target for Barcelona, especially after he rejected an initial offer from Liverpool. Recent reports had even claimed that the 29-year-old was open to joining Barcelona, while Liverpool appeared hopeful of reaching an agreement with him over a renewal.

The two parties have finally reached a consensus to finalise a new long-term contract that could be worth around £500,000 per week. Barcelona will now have to set sights on another alternative, with Salah committing his long-term future to Liverpool.
