Barcelona will reportedly provide stiff competition to bitter rival Real Madrid in the race to sign Kieran Tierney from Arsenal in the summer.

According to a report by 90 min, Kieran Tierney will be a popular figure in the market heading into the summer transfer window. The Arsenal defender is the subject of interest from Barcelona and Real Madrid over a possible move ahead of the 2022/23 season.

Kieran Tierney spent his formative years with Celtic before bursting onto the limelight when he broke into their first-team setup while still in his teens. During his stint with the Scottish giants, the 24-year-old garnered interest from some of the most high profile clubs in Europe before Arsenal snapped him up in August 2019.

The Scottish international has been beset by fitness issues along the way. But he is unquestionably a pivotal figure for Arsenal, for whom he has turned out 87 times thus far, chipping in with four goals and 12 assists in the process. Tierney’s exploits for Arsenal have not gone unnoticed, with Real Madrid and Barcelona setting their sights on him.

The interest from Real Madrid stems from Marcelo’s upcoming departure from the Santiago Bernabeu. The veteran Brazilian defender will leave as a free agent when his contract runs out in the summer transfer window. And with Ferland Mendy’s Real Madrid future not set in stone, signing a left-back will keep Los Blancos in good stead.

Tierney is thus a viable target for Real Madrid, with recent reports claiming that the Merengues are preparing a bid to land the Arsenal defender. But the Spanish giants will face stiff competition from arch-rivals Barcelona in the race to sign Tierney in the summer transfer window.

Barcelona could delve into the market for a left-back ahead of the 2022/23 season as Jordi Alba is approaching the final phase of his illustrious career. With Alejandro Balde yet to establish a foothold in the first-team setup at Camp Nou, the Blaugrana will need to seek a solution in the summer, with Fran Garcia among the left-backs linked with them.

Tierney is also an option worth considering for Barcelona, who could go head-to-head with Real Madrid in the race to sign the Arsenal defender. But with the 24-year-old a key figure for Arsenal, the Gunners could put up a strong fight to keep hold of the Scot beyond the summer transfer window.
