Newcastle United are interested in Alessio Romagnoli, as his AC Milan future remains in massive doubt with an expiring contract.

According to Tutto Mercato Web, Alessio Romagnoli is a target for Newcastle United in the summer, as the Magpies eye a free transfer for the AC Milan captain. The defender’s future at the San Siro remains doubtful, which has prompted transfer speculations.

Romagnoli has been an able servant for AC Milan, making 246 appearances since joining the club in 2015. However, the defender’s time at the San Siro could be coming to a close, as the centre-back might evaluate other options before next season.

Romagnoli’s contract with AC Milan expires in the summer, and despite attempts from the Rossoneri to extend it, things have remained static. But the Italian outfit hope to keep the dialogue open with their captain’s camp as they are not yet resigned to seeing him leave on a free transfer.

The 27-year-old has attracted considerable interest from clubs across the continent, including England. The prospect of getting a defender of his quality and experience on a free transfer is an enticing prospect for teams.

Newcastle United have become the latest club to join the chase for Romagnoli, as the cash-rich Premier League side hope to lure him to St James’ Park next season. The Magpies could certainly offer a lucrative contract or match the best proposal on the table, considering their newfound financial muscle.

Eddie Howe remains keen on signing a top-rated central defender in the next window, with Dutch star Sven Botman their primary target. Newcastle tried their best to lure the Lille star in January and are set to have another go after the season ends.

Meanwhile, AC Milan are thought to be frontrunner for Botman, with the San Siro outfit working hard in the background to make a move happen. The transfer could become a priority if Romagnoli’s departure becomes certain, as the club will want to replace him with a top-quality operator.

Newcastle are keeping tabs on Romagnoli’s situation and could make an attempt to bring the Italian to the Premier League. However, they will have to battle Juventus and Sevilla, who are also interested in him, while Lazio are also keen on signing the centre-back and are set to hold talks imminently.

As things stand, Romagnoli is on the verge of leaving AC Milan on a free transfer and clubs like Newcastle United will be ready to poach the 27-year-old away come summer.
