Manchester United are reportedly tracking the progress of Merih Demiral with a view of making a summer move, with Atalanta expected to buy him outright.

According to Fanatik, there could be significant interest in Merih Demiral during the summer transfer window, with Manchester United among the clubs keeping track of the Turkish defender. Atalanta could exercise their purchase option on the 24-year-old centre-back and look to sell him for a quick profit.

Merih Demiral’s case at Atalanta is turning out exactly how Cristian Romero’s future transpired when he left the Serie A club last summer. La Dea exercised their purchase option on the Argentine before agreeing on a deal with Tottenham that will seemingly net them a massive profit.

Looking at the success of Atalanta’s ideas, Juventus were again ready to send one of their other centre-backs in Merih Demiral to their fellow Serie A club, with the loan deal containing a reasonable purchase option. Atalanta can make the Turkish defender’s deal permanent by paying €27 million, although they could look to sell him on a massive profit.

Real Madrid have recently been linked with the Turkish international, but plenty of Premier League clubs are also keeping tabs on him. The 24-year-old defender has played 31 times for Atalanta this season, with the Serie A club successfully finding the right replacement for Romero.

However, Atalanta’s demands if they sign him permanently could be at the same level as what they asked for Romero last year. Real Madrid are reportedly willing to go up to €35 million for the defender, but the Serie A giants may want much more.

In the last few days, Manchester United have entered the frame for the Turkish international, with the Premier League bigwigs scouring the market for some quality central defenders ahead of the summer transfer window. While the focus remains on appointing a new permanent manager, the backline could also be shored up.

Current options are not considered up to the mark despite the presence of Victor Lindelof, Raphael Varane and Harry Maguire. The Manchester United captain, in particular, has come in for heavy criticism this term, with some even labelling him not at the levels needed for Manchester United.

The club may look to make a few additions and freshen up their options a bit heading into the 2022/23 season. Manchester United might well be willing to pay the top price for the right player, and considering their required profile, Demiral fits the bill.
