Manchester City will reportedly rival Manchester United and Real Madrid in the race to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

According to a report by Spanish outlet Fichajes, three clubs are in the running to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window. Manchester City will battle Manchester United and Real Madrid in the pursuit of the veteran Polish striker.

Robert Lewandowski is one of the greatest players of his generation, having gone from strength to strength since arriving in Germany over a decade ago. And while he was already a prolific striker during his stint with Borussia Dortmund, he has transformed into a goal machine since joining Bayern Munich in July 2014.

The 33-year-old broke Gerd Muller’s long-standing record of scoring most goals in a Bundesliga campaign the last term and is primed to go one further this season, having amassed 29 goals in 26 outings thus far. But the Bavarian giants are in a spot of bother as Lewandowski has a little over a year left on his current deal, with a renewal nowhere in sight. Real Madrid, Manchester United, and Manchester City are keen on signing the player.

The interest from Real Madrid stems from the intense competition in the race to sign Erling Haaland. But the pursuit of the veteran striker does not make sense, considering he is nearly as old as Karim Benzema, who has been a pivotal figure for Real Madrid for the longest time. Instead, the Merengues need a long-term successor, although it looks like Lewandowski could be an option.

As for Manchester United, Cristiano Ronaldo’s uncertain future at Old Trafford has left them in a spot of bother, especially with Edinson Cavani set to depart in the summer transfer window. And Lewandowski could be a solid short-term option for Manchester United, thereby explaining their pursuit of the Bayern Munich goal machine.

The latest entrants in the race to sign Lewandowski are Premier League champions Manchester City. The Citizens’ need for a striker stems from their inability to replace Sergio Aguero last summer. And with Gabriel Jesus not a regular feature, Manchester City will have to delve into the market for a natural centre-forward, despite their prolific displays this season. Lewandowski is thus a viable target.
