Manchester United playmaker Juan Mata has been courted by Real Sociedad and Real Betis as he eyes a return to Spain.

According to a report from Fichajes, Manchester United are set to part ways with Juan Mata in the summer. The experienced playmaker favours a return to his homeland, with Real Sociedad and Real Betis already registering their interest in the player. Both the Spanish clubs are expected to make an approach for Mata, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.

Part of the Manchester United setup since 2014, Mata is a Premier League veteran who has already racked up 277 competitive appearances for the club. During his time at United and Chelsea, the playmaker has bagged several accolades, including two FA Cups, two Europa League titles and one Champions League title.

However, his influence at Old Trafford has taken a hit in recent years. The veteran is yet to muster over 1,000 minutes of league football in any of his last two completed seasons. He is yet to appear in a single Premier League game this term, thus compelling the 33-year-old to put an end to his misery at Manchester United.

Mata’s current deal at Old Trafford expires at the end of the season, allowing the player to leave on a free transfer. He has already attracted significant interest from Spanish clubs, including Real Sociedad and Real Betis.

Buoyed by the success of David Silva, Real Sociedad are immensely keen on partnering the Manchester United playmaker with his former Manchester City counterpart. The two were teammates during their time at Valencia and in the Spanish national team. A potential reunion next season could significantly strengthen the creative ranks at Real Sociedad.

Real Betis are equally keen on strengthening their creative department, which has flourished – in part – thanks to the influence of Nabil Fekir. There are already concerns over the long term future of the Frenchman, especially amid interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Barcelona.

As such, Betis are prepared to make a move for Juan Mata. With a tally of 51 goals and 64 assists in 271 Premier League appearances, the 33-year-old has what it takes to shine at the highest level and could help Los Beticos reach their goals and objectives next season.

Manchester United have kickstarted the process of finding their desired replacement for Mata. They are reportedly in contention to sign RB Leipzig superstar Christopher Nkunku, with the Red Devils even willing to triple the Frenchman’s wages at Old Trafford.
