Manchester United and Tottenham are set to rival Juventus in the race to sign Torino’s Brazilian centre-back Gleison Bremer in the summer.

According to Tutto Juve, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur have joined Serie A giants Juventus in pursuit of Torino defender Gleison Bremer ahead of the summer transfer window.

Bremer signed for Torino in the summer of 2018 from Brazilian club Atletico Mineiro and has grown into one of the most reliable defenders in the Italian top-flight despite the Granata’s struggles in the lower half of the table year after year. The 24-year-old was on the radars of several top clubs last year, but a move never materialised, and he stayed put at Torino.

Bremer signed a new contract with the Serie A outfit last month, extending his stay until the summer of 2024. However, he is expected to be on his way out of the club later this year, with some of the elite clubs chasing his signature, including Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus.

Manchester United could be in for another big investment on a new defender in the summer despite having spent heavily on Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane in recent years. The former has been criticised for his erroneous displays, with some pundits even urging the club to offload him. And with doubts over the futures of Eric Bailly and Phil Jones, a new top centre-back will become a necessity.

Manchester United, to that end, have been linked with several centre-halves in recent weeks, including Chelsea contract rebel Antonio Rudiger and Borussia Dortmund defender Manuel Akanji. And now Bremer, too, has emerged as an option for the 20-time English champions ahead of the summer.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are also on the lookout for defensive reinforcements despite Cristian Romero’s solid displays. Joe Rodon and Japhet Tanganga have not been convincing enough and could be shown the exit door in the summer. Ben Davies has done fairly well on the left side of the back three, but the Lilywhites can use an upgrade on him as well, leading to links with several top defenders.

Stefan de Vrij has been linked the strongest, with reports even claiming that Tottenham are already preparing a lucrative contract offer for the Inter Milan star. However, the north Londoners are keeping their options open and have also identified Bremer as a target.

As for the interest from Juventus, they need to lay down the succession plan for ageing veterans Leonardo Bonucci and Giorgio Chiellini. Furthermore, there are some doubts over the future of Matthijs de Ligt as well. So, a move for Bremer would make sense for the Bianconeri. Apart from Juventus, Serie A rivals AC Milan, and Inter Milan are also keen on the Brazilian.

With the race heating up to sign Bremer in the summer, it will be interesting to see where the 24-year-old ends up.
